BRIGHTON, ONT – The busiest and fastest night of racing hit the track for night two of Brighton Speedway’s PartSource Applefest Shootout Weekend presented by Cool 100, Coca-Cola, Lucas Oil and Image Factor on Saturday night.

The pit area was jammed with 125 cars signed in for action in five divisions with the PartSource Applefest Shootout 100 for the 358 Modifieds and 65-lap Excel Tower Service Great Crate Race presented by Hotch’s Auto Parts, Dibbits Excavating and Vanderlaan Building Products for the Go Nuclear Late Model Series headlining the night’s events.

Rudolph Wins Third Straight Applefest Shootout

The name Erick Rudolph (No.62 Van Raine Construction) has become synonymous with victory lane at Brighton’s Applefest Shootout weekend and 2016 was no different. The Ransomville, NY native drove from the 12th starting spot to win the 100-lap DIRTcar 358 Modified race and $5,000 payday for the third straight year.

Tyler McPherson (No.777) led early after starting on the pole. A trio of restarts before the race reached lap 25 kept the field tight and allowed Rudolph to make his march forward. Gary Lindberg (No.28 He’s Not Here Bar & Grill) drove to the lead on a lap 18 restart and opened a five-second lead over Mcpherson before a caution on lap 40.

At the halfway mark, Kyle Dingwall (No.66 King Edward Auto Parts) trailed Lindberg in the runner-up position while McPherson and Rudolph raced nearby. Rudolph drove to second shortly after and then challenged Lindberg for the lead on a lap 65 restart. Lindberg moved the Ransomville native up the track in turns three and four which allowed Dingwall to take over the top spot.

Another restart 11 laps later saw Rudolph return the favour to Lindberg as he retook second and four laps later claimed the lead from Dingwall. Despite another handful of cautions, Rudolph scored the win by maintaining momentum through the middle of the racetrack which was also the slickest part of the surface. Nobody else in the field could run the same line as Rudolph, allowing him to pull away to a victory by 1.6 seconds over Lindberg, Dingwall, Ryan Arbuthnot (No.R70) and Chad Brachmann (No.3).

Sandercock Wins Second Straight Great Crate Race

Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) didn’t lead many laps in Saturday’s Excel Tower Service Great Crate Race presented by Hotch’s Auto Parts, Dibbits Excavating and Vanderlaan Building Products for the Go Nuclear Late Model Series, but he led the final one to earn his second straight $6,000 payday.

Kyle Sopaz (No.12 KD Transmissions) started on the pole for the 65-lap event with Chris Fleming (No.10 Hottenstein Bus Service) to his outside. Sopaz led a very clean race that saw him pull Sandercock along to a three-second lead over third-place running Chad Homan (No.91 DigTrack.com).

A pair of cautions on lap 22 regrouped the field as Sopaz continued to lead Sandercock and Hornell, NY native Bryce Davis (No.94 Close Racing Supply) at the halfway point. Two more caution on lap 34 and 37 appeared to reenergize Friday night winner Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan) as he jumped past Sandercock for second with 20 laps to go.

Sandercock got the better of Potts on a lap 51 restart to retake second and two laps later took advantage of a mistake by Sopaz to lead off turn two. A restart with five laps to go allowed Davis to move past Sopaz to second as he sought to challenge Sandercock.

The final restart came with three laps to go and Sandercock bobbled the car on the start allowing Sopaz to retake the lead momentarily. Sandercock fought back to lead the final two laps and claim the victory over Sopaz, Potts, Davis and Homan.

Hennessy Wins Second Straight Danny Reid Memorial

Drivers in the Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified division had to wait an extra two weeks to run their biggest race of the season and it was well worth the wait. The John’s Equipment Danny Reid Memorial put the longest race, at 50 laps, and the biggest winner’s pay, at $2,000, up for grabs.

Curtis King (No.07 Flowmetrix) started on the pole after winning the Costa Del Mar pole dash with Dan Fergsuon (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) outside the front row.

King led until Ferguson challenged him in the outside lane on lap seven. The two raced side-by-side until Ferguson took the top spot on lap nine. On lap 16 Andrew Hennessy (No.87 RJ Equipment Rentals) drove to second and set out to track down Ferguson.

Three attempts at a lap 17 restart pitted the two drivers against each other until Ferguson suffered a flat right front tire before the field got back up to speed on lap 17. Hennessy assumed the lead and pulled ahead of King by a full straightaway at the halfway mark. The advantage was erased, however, on lap 39 when Derek Bowers (No.03 Morton’s Crane Rental) spun in turn two.

Hennessy made no mistakes on the restart and grew the lead back to four seconds with two laps to go over King and Kraig Handley (No.91 Tri-Canadian Energy). Hennessy crossed the finish line 5.1 seconds ahead of King, a full straightaway advantage, to earn the $2,000 winner’s cheque. The victory also officially gave Hennessy the 2016 track championship, his second straight division title at Brighton.

Pelletier Scores Super DIRTcar Sportsman Series Win

A massive field of DIRTcar Sportsman drivers helped fill the pit area for the second-half of the doubleheader weekend. Several drivers made the trip from Friday’s series race in Quebec while others extended their stay at Brighton for the second Sportsman race of the weekend.

Martin Pelletier (No.92 BRRS Recycling) of Sorel, QC started on the pole for the 35-lap main event and never relinquished the top spot. Pelletier overcame restarts on lap 6, 18, 25 and 26 to earn the win. Pelletier fought off a group of tough contenders including Humberstone champion Brad Rouse (No.18r Rick’s Delivery), Friday night winner and Merrittville champion Cody McPherson and front row starter Jessica Power (No.52 Speedy Auto Service).

While Rouse and McPherson periodically tried the outside lane, Pelletier successfully used the shortest way around the 1/3-mile oval to dominate the race. McPherson took second from Rouse on a restart with nine laps to go and finished in the runner-up spot. Rouse, Justin Sharp (No.8s Blue Moon Potatoes) and Brianna Ladouceur (No.15b Twin Leaf Express) completed the top-five.

Ramsay Claims Duel on the Dirt Finale

The first feature of the night was the season finale for the Duel on the Dirt Pro Stock Series, a four-track cooperation between Brighton, Humberstone, Merrittville and Ohsweken Speedways. Dave Bailey (No.49 Jibs Action Sports) of Hagersville, Ont. pulled the pole for the 50-lap feature in the redraw and led the majority of the race. He was tested through a handful of first half restarts and a challenge from Port Colborne’s Jason Fontaine (No.1J Skinny’s Pro Windows).

At the halfway mark, Bailey led a three-car breakaway including Brighton regular Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Landscape Service) and Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire). A restart with just four laps to go setup an exciting finish. With two to go, Bailey put two wheels off the racetrack exiting turn two. That allowed Ramsay to take the lead in to turn three.

Anderson relegated Bailey to third while Ramsay led the final three laps to claim the victory and the series championship. Anderson, Bailey, Kyle Pelrine (No.47x Semenuk’s Roofing) and Adam Turner (No.88 Independent Alternator and Starter) completed the top-five.

Brighton Speedway’s final event of the season is the Lange & Fetter Ford Eve of Destruction set for Saturday, October 1. The day features plenty of carnage headlined by the Hotch’s Auto Parts Enduro 100, Workman’s OK Tire School Bus Races, the Gauntlet, Trailer Race, Juniors Race and Ladies Race.
