Brewerton Speedway was the place to be this past Friday night, as the Super DirtCar series hit the track to officially kick off their 2017 season, and to mark the track’s season opener. Fans were treated to some great racing and a full pit area eager to get behind the wheel.
Larry Wight came out victorious, picking up his heat win and the checkers in the 35 lap feature event. The drivers certainly made the best of the spring track conditions, putting on a great race for the fans. Larry White and teammate Pat Ward raced side by side, battling back and forth for the lead for the first part of the race, displaying their driving talents for the great crowd on hand. By lap 10 Ward had cleared Wight and was beginning to strengthen his lead. A mere 3 laps later things would change though as Wight would turn the car into high gear, rapidly closing in on Ward and passing him for the lead. Wight would continue to gain momentum and by lap 15 had a half a straightaway lead over Ward.
With 10 laps to go it seemed to be clear sailing for Wight, who had by this point opened up a straightaway lead and was well into lap traffic. However, the dreaded caution would come out with 8 laps to go and that would bunch the field back up for what the fans hoped would be an exciting restart.
The green flagged dropped and Wight got back on the gas quickly, hitting his marks and pulling away from the field until the checkers flew for the 99L. Jimmy Phelps, Billy Decker, Matt Hulsizer and Max Mclaughlin rounded out the top 5.
